Metabolic Resistance Training for a Body Transformation

MRT or for those of us that have too many acroynms to remember…metabolic resistance training requires a mop to wipe yourself off the floor when you are done.  MRT done right requires a maximum effort exercise output that yields fat torching, muscle building, effects in a minimal training time.   Metabolic resistance training kicks your metabolism into high gear, which will burn calories long after the workout is finished. Plus you will be pushing your lactate threshold.   The benefits of metabolic resistance training are numerous, but what exactly is it and why should you care?

What is Metabolic Resistance Training?

Simply stated MRT covers the blending of high intensity cardiovascular training with strength training.  You will be using multi-joint, compound movements in supersets.  Place these in with circuits that include speed work.  Overtop of all this you will be minimizing rest periods, which yields great aerobic and anaerobic training.

Metabolic resistance training is for those of you tired of long cardio sessions on the treadmill and would rather get your workout done quickly so you can be at home with the family or out living your life.

How does Metabolic Resistance Training work?

MRT creates an energy deficit in the body unlike normal exercise.  The body adapts to the physical stresses we place on it.  MRT taps into this building / rebuilding capacity of the body.  Your metabolism is using eaten and stored energy (food or that spare tire around the waist, etc) to carry on daily activities.  The purpose of exercise is to cause musclar change which requires energy.  The more musclar change that is stimulated the great energy needed by the body and the longer the process goes.  Steady state cardio work only scratches the surface of the body’s potential for change, whereas metabolic resistance training can take all day and night for the body to rebuild (recover).

hugh jackman300 225x300 Metabolic Resistance Training for a Body TransformationThe idea is to tap into as much of our body’s ability to change as possible.  If you use a well designed metabolic resistance training program you can build lean muscle while burning fat.  The best part is that you will also gain strength.

Who doesn’t want that lean chiseled look of celebrities?

Still not sure if you want to try Metabolic Resistance Training…

An MRT workout can create an energy consumption of over 600 calories (Here is a sample 1000 Calorie workout).   That kind of calorie deficit is pretty awesome, but the better thing is the afterburn created by a high intensity workout.  The afterburn or post-exercise oxygen consumption spikes following an intense workout.  Translation, this effect is how long it takes your body to return to its normal resting state.  Test it out yourself by getting up from your chair and do 20 burpees as fast as you can.  Seriously, do it right now.  Ok, now you are experiencing an increased oxygen need (breathing harder after, rather than during the exercise) plus you are probably feeling a spike in body temperature (feeling flushed, hot, and maybe now sweating).  That is the afterburn, and if you strategically use this effect you can be burning calories for over 38 hours.

Do you want to give MRT a try, but aren’t sure where to start?

    Richard,

Good primer on what Metabolic Resistance Training is all about. MRT is a great way to increase strength while getting the body lean. I’ve written about metabolic training as my favorite way to burn off stubborn body fat. I subscribe to the philosophy of working hard in short bursts to see the best results.

Also, Craig Ballantyne puts together some great products. I haven’t come across a Turbulence Training program that wasn’t first rate.

This is my favorite type of workout. It’s time efficient, effective and burns excess fat at an incredible rate. You can’t go wrong with Craig Ballantyne! Thanks for the post!

Mitchell, I am right there with you on using short burst training to squeeze in extra sessions because a 8-5 job and family doesn’t leave much time to exercise. Craig definitely puts out some of the best programs for the time crunched individual. Great write-up by the way.

Interesting, this is what ive been telling my buddies to do for ages now to take their workouts to the next level. Kind of funny to see Craig promoting this big time and demolishing some of the myths out there. I might even buy his program just to see what other tricks i might be missing.

Thanks for stopping by James! Way to be ahead of the HIIT curve and I would definitely recommend Craig’s stuff. His programs are great and prices them so they are accessible to everyone.

    Cheers,
    Richard
