Last week, I engaged in a conversation on the importance of rotating training focus. This conversation was with a couple coworkers and to add some context we are the suit and tie folks that spend too much time at our desks. A lunch challenge came from this conversation. I accepted it… and DESTROYED it! I completed my first and second muscle-up.
This is what happens when a morning meeting finishes early. My coworkers, one happens to be a Facebook friend and brought up some posts that I have been sharing for the last few weeks. The last four weeks, to be precise, I have been posting about the current training program that I am following. It happens to be Shaun T’s Focus T25.
We weren’t talking about the Focus T25, rather I was trying to convince them that rotating programs helps to keep from overtraining.
The obvious response I got was a sarcastic sure…whatever.
So like any guy would do, I thought I would prove my point. I decided to try and complete my first muscle-up.
I have never completed a muscle-up on rings or bar or ever. I am able to do a decent number of pull-ups (and variations), but had not been training pull-ups while I am doing the Focus T25 program. The month prior, I wasn’t training for a muscle-up. I was training TacFit 26 programs.
The only hanging training I had been actively doing was Ido’s seven minute hanging challenge.
Back to the story
I work at hospital that is part of a larger hospital network. My meeting happened to be at one of our sister hospitals that happens to have a small fitness room. The fitness room happened to have a smith machine that provided almost the perfect spot for the lunch challenge.
The one main downside was that the ceiling was just six inches to short as you can see in the video when my head hit the ceiling tile.
My ego didn’t fail me
This could’ve been a big fat failure, but I tried any way. I know my form wasn’t great and that I still need to clean up my transition. However, I pushed myself outside my comfort zone. I knew I was strong enough and with the pride on the line (and the extra nudge from the power of the Christmas tie) I was successful.
Do you have something on your list to complete or some other goal? I dare you to try it.
What challenge are you going to try to overcome today? Let me know if I can help you complete it!
Go crush it!
